What hours do you work?
Our actual work hours are 9 am – 4 pm Monday – Friday however this is not the time spent on the project site. To keep our prices low as possible we typically put in about five to six hours a day of non stop work on the project site and typically do not take breaks or an hour long lunch as most contractors do. Since we have to pay and insure workers from the moment they arrive at our shop and touch their first tool till the last tool is back in the shop and the worker clocked out we are responsible for travel time of about an hour each direction. We can however work with customers who require eight hours of work however we must charge a higher labor rate to cover these additional costs. It also allows us to not be in your way as you prepare to go to work and get the kids ready for school in the morning and the same applies in the evening when the customer or their kids get home from school and are preparing for dinner. We are more than happy to work with you on daily work hours however most of our customers over the years see the advantages in these type hours and how it benefits us both and keeps their prices as low as possible.
Does someone have to remain home while the painting is being done?
No, in fact most people are not home during the day and arrangements
can be made in advance to accommodate your schedule.
What do I have to do in order to get ready for the painters
It is best to remove all furniture, wall hangings and other
belongings from the work area prior to the start of that days work.
Since w work in small crews we normally do not have the manpower to
move furniture and to keep our insurance costs low we refrain from
moving or touching customers belongings. With all furniture removed
from the area we can fully protect the flooring of the entire room
with tarps. In some cases furniture cannot be moved – in those cases
it should be centered in the middle of the room and covered in
plastic. All pets should be put in a secure location and children
prevented from entering the work area.
How often should you have to paint the interior?
Many factors can contribute to that. The quality of the paint used is of the utmost importance.
The amount of traffic through a particular area.
Whether or not there are smokers in the home.
Is there a fireplace that is used on a regular basis during the
winter months, and does the damper work properly?
How many children and their ages?
There are too many factors to take into consideration, and each home
can be different. However a good quality job done by a professional
crew under normal conditions should last anywhere from 6-10 years.
Call us and we will be happy to evaluate your particular situation
and offer you a more precise answer.
What kind of surface preparation is done?
As a norm we expect the customer is already happy with the condition of their walls before we start painting your project. We will patch minor nail holes and damage at the customers request.
If caulking or crack repair is needed we need the customer to advise
us of this prior to work start so that work can be included in the
bid because anytime drywall mud is used (as opposed to normal patching compounds) the dry time is significant and in most cases cannot be painted the same day which lengthens the project time and labor costs and requires primer to be applied to all patch spots before it can be painted.
Should I primer?
If you have brand new drywall or repaired drywall with
exposed joint compound you must primer to seal the
surfaces and prepare for painting using a PVA primer. In other cases it’s
generally not necessary however doing a coat of primer
on the walls does help bond the new paint better. We
generally recommend use of a paint and primer formulated
paint which generally eliminates the need for a standard
primer coat however for absolute certainty in the
longevity of your paint work we can do a primer coat and
the normal amount of paint coats at an additional cost.
How many painters will be in my home?
While every job is different normally you can expect a crew of 1-2
painters as a norm. We are a small company so we don’t have big crews available.
What kind of paint is used?
Customer directly purchases all paints and we recommend use of
Sherwin-Williams products which we can get for you at a substantial
discount. At customer request we can work with several other well
known brands once cleared with the contractor. You should never
purchase paints prior to talking with the contractor. The paint we typically use on all projects is Sherwin’s Super Paint which is a high performance paint+primer which works great for walls, ceilings and woodwork. In some cases with very deep colors we have to use a more expensive like Sherwin’s Duration since the Super Paint is not available with an ultra deep base. We also have access to lower quality products like Promar 200 and even Property Solutions which are more suited for rental properties and locations with high turnover. We only recommend these paints for repaints when you are applying the same color and sheen paint over the existing which is very common with commercial and retail structures.
What if I don’t like the color I picked?
We want you happy upon the completion of your job. But regardless of
the quality of work done, you may be unhappy with the colors you
choose. After selecting a painting contractor, the selection of
colors to be used are the next most important decision that you need
to make. Take your time on color selection and only use a company
that is willing to assist you in making those decisions. Ask for
color charts ahead of time and buy a quart or so of paint to try it
on a couple of different areas of your home as well as in different
types of lighting. The cost of a few samples of paint is much
cheaper than repainting a room or entire house if you end up unhappy
with the color chosen. If you do not want to change the color of
your home, then just ask us to match the existing color and we will
most likely be able to do that.
How do I get an estimate?
Give us a call or e-mail for the quickest bid. Many can be done over
the phone, in home visits, if necessary, are free.
My friend has this color in their house that I like, can I use it in my
house, and will it look the same?
We can get the same color, but keep in mind that every house is
different and the color may not look the same or have the same
effect in your home as it does in theirs. Find out from your friend
what the color is and get a sample. Paint an area approx. 3′”x 3″ in
a few different sections and check how it will look in your home.
Lighting, carpet, furniture and other factors may give it a
different look in your home. Our paint supplier Sherwin-Williams also offers a color matching service which can accurately pinpoint most common colors.
I have some cracks that always reappear, is there anything we can do?
Cracks can be repaired but regardless of the preparation done some
may reappear. However the best chance at successfully repairing
those cracks is to dig out the crack, fill it, tape it with a
fiberglass mesh or paper tape and sand it smooth, then prime over your
patched area before repainting. We have a drywall professional we can put you in touch with who can handle this type work when it is above and beyond what we typically do.
If I decide to choose your company, what do I do next?
Contact us and we will send you a bid, contract and schedule your
We have drywall damage… Do we need to have that repaired before the painters
We do minor drywall repair however major repairs should be done by a
dedicated drywall professional. We will be more than happy to assist
in finding an appropriate contractor for your project and working
with them in scheduling the work.
I have received a number of estimates from different painting contractors
and there seems to be a wide variance in prices, why is that?
There are a number of good painting contractors to choose from and
what you will normally find is that the established companies are
usually fairly close in price. However at times you will get an
estimate that is a lot lower than others and at times you may get
one that seems excessively high. There could be many factors here.
Is the company licensed and insured? Do the painters work for the
company therefore being subject to all of the additional payroll
expenses or are they day labor? Quality does not come from cheap
painters and individuals who paint – this is a skilled trade and the
quality comes from years of doing this as a daily job and not as
something you do occasionally.
The house doesn’t look that bad. Why should I paint?
A house is a lot like an automobile in the fact that the investment
is large and the maintenance is a must. If we don’t wait until the
engine blows to check or change the oil we can protect our
investment. If you are looking to sell any real estate agent will
tell you a big factor in achieving top dollar for your property in
sale or rental is a fresh paint job.
Why is choosing an interior color so difficult?
The only answer I can give you is, lighting, lighting, lighting!
Light and reflections in any given room affect the outcome of your
When purchasing paint, I’ve been asked if I want flat, high gloss, satin and
even an eggshell finish. What do these terms mean, and does it really make
any difference what kind of finish I have?
Yes. The difference can be a big one depending on the surface and
area that you are preparing to paint. We are able to assist you in
choices of what sheen is most appropriate for your individual needs.
Which is better for repainting interior walls, latex or alkyd based paint? For most applications on interior walls, a latex paint will offer
many advantages over alkyd paint. In most available products you
will receive better color retention and the finish will be
non-yellowing. Additionally, the latex products will have a lower
odor, dry faster, and you will be able to clean up with soap and
I see paint advertised all the time, which one should I use?
There is an old saying “You only get what you pay for.” This is
especially true for paint. Discuss what you want the paint to do
with your professional installer or your paint store, to determine
the best product for your needs. Remember that the paint is only
part of the job. It is always the best decision to use the best
products. We recommend using high quality Sherwin-Williams paint
through our contractor discount. This pricing allows us to cut your
paint costs nearly in half which on large jobs can result in several
hundred dollars in additional savings while not sacrificing quality.
How long should I wait before hanging items after painting?
We recommend waiting at least a few days. Paint dries in a matter of
a few hours but all paint goes through a curing process which takes
Why is painting so expensive?
Painting, like everything else, is expensive. We realize that. In
the last 20 years, labor costs have increased fourfold. The cost of
paint has almost doubled. Insurance for a business is astronomical.
So you are absolutely right, it is expensive. But not when you look
at the cost of painting compared to carpeting, fabric, wallpaper,
and window treatments at about $10.00 to $50.00 per square foot
compared to painting at about $2.00 to $4.00 per square foot, it
doesn’t seem too bad.
What can we do with leftover paint from prior years?
Leftover paints should be stored away from drastic changes in
temperature. When possible it should be stored in a cool basement or
inside storage area. This can keep your paints usable for some time
and also help you retain color code information which may be needed
for repaints. If you no longer want to keep it most areas have
recycling programs for paints so they do not end up in landfills.
